Volunteers
Volunteers Literally "Hold Down the Fort."

Spend some time in the past lane at Apple River Fort!

The volunteer program at Apple River Fort involves a good measure of citizen input.  After all, this fort was built by civilians in 1832, and provided protection for the Apple River Settlement, but also produced several heroines.

Whether it be firing a black powder musket, cooking in the iron skillet over the open fire, or celebrating 1832's style of July 4th... the volunteers of Apple River Fort have the opportunity to experience the past.  Most are dressed in period clothes, and like to tell the story of the battle against Black Hawk.  (also about day-to-day life of the time period)

The Fort has a commanding view of Elizabeth in scenic Jo Daviess County, and volunteers can enjoy the sights, smells, and sounds of the early 19th century.

There are monthly meetings of the volunteers and special activities to participate in throughout the year.  For more information, contact the Site Manager at
